How to hang a body of work

This week I am getting ready to hang an exhibition of my prints.

Hanging work for an exhibition is a thought provoking experience and requires quite a lot of planning.

I find the admin created by holding an exhibition is challenging but I know it makes a difference to a good show - not just in how it looks, but how easy it is for visitors to get a feeling for my work, what I want to say and how I feel!

I have decided which work is going to be shown and have been to visit the venue - a long, perhaps slightly narrow, corridor outside the theatre and the good news is the wall is newly painted white and there is an excellent hanging system and the opposite wall is glass so I’m hoping the lighting in the corridor is good enough as it will be evening private view.

I have planned the order of the prints along the corridor, trying to consider the mix of colour and black and white, the frames and the subjects and tomorrow I am going to hang the work which will give me the opportunity to see if my plans for the exhibition work.

Hanging the work early will also give me 48 hours to sort out the labels for each framed print giving all the details about each print before the private view.

Phew!
